What is Bio-Pycnogenol?
The procyanides contained in pycnogenol bind to the water- and fat-soluble parts of cells, protecting them from free radicals. Bio-Pycnogenol contains a unique blend of water-soluble naturally occurring bioflavonoids and fruit acids, many of which are also powerful antioxidants. Bio-Pycnogenol is a dietary supplement that supports the body's functioning blood circulation. The patented Pycnogenol extract is made from the bark of a French coastal pine. The trees are grown on 2.5-acre plantations in southwestern France. The wood material is used in the manufacture of furniture and the bark material generated as a by-product of wood production is utilized as a raw material for the production of Pycnogenol. One kilogram of bark can produce one kilogram of Pycnogenol. New seedlings are planted in place of felled trees, making production sustainable. No pesticides are used to grow the trees, and no toxic solvents are used in the Pycnogenol extraction process.

In the production of pycnogenol, pine bark is utilized within two days of felling the wood to preserve important bioflavonoids until the product. In a patented manufacturing process, the outer shell layer of pine is ground and extracted using a mixture of water and ethanol. The resulting raw material is thoroughly purified, spray-dried and converted into a fine brown powdery product. The procyanide content of the extract, i.e. the amount of active plant compounds in the extract, is then standardized to 70% (+/- 5%).

Pycnogenol contains a wide variety of bioflavonoids, such as catechin, epicatechin, flavones, and taxifoline. In addition, Pycnogenol contains various fruit acids such as caffeic acid, ferulic acid, gallic acid, coumaric acid and vanillic acid. Both bioflavonoids and fruit acids are also naturally present in fruits and vegetables, but not in the same variety or in the same high concentrations.

Pycnogenol has been on the market for over 40 years and is the subject of extensive scientific research. It has received the GRAS (Generally Recognized as Safe) safety label from toxicology experts, which means that it is classified as completely safe to use.
